I read an interesting book – titled Napoleon's buttons: 17 molecules that changed history – that masterly crosses chemistry and culture. Sort of like Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel, but from the perspective of a couple of organic chemists. InstituteDuring our school ;s annual Read Me Week the kids had fun making buttons for our friends to read and dressing up as their favorite book characters. Earlier this year I read a book entitled “Napoleon's Buttons: 17 molecules that changed history.” The book discusses 17 molecules, and their derivatives, (i.e. I think it is a great read to go along with a chemistry study. Chemistry, history, industry, and war are only some of the elements (pun intended) in this pretty fascinating book. Tarcher/Putnam 354 pages plus acknowledgements and index, illustrations of molecules. Napoleon's Buttons is the fascinating account of seventeen groups of molecules that have greatly influenced the course of history.
